Man dies after burglary suspects collide with Portland Police Bureau vehicle in Southeast Portland

On October 6, 2023 at 2:57 AM, East Precinct officers responded to a report of a burglary at a bookstore in the 16400 block of SE Powell Boulevard. According to a Portland Police Bureau press release, responding officers located a white 2016 Kia Optima believed to be the suspect vehicle. The vehicle was leaving the scene. Officers initiated a traffic stop near SE 136th Avenue and SE Holgate Boulevard, but the driver did not pull over and attempted to elude police.

Officers did not pursue the suspect vehicle due to policy restrictions. Instead, officers began to coordinate intervention techniques. Around 3:15 AM, police say the suspect vehicle and a police vehicle collided at SE Holgate Boulevard and SE 111th Avenue. Two officers in the 2023 Ford Police Interceptor Utility were injured and transported to the hospital. An adult male driver and an adult female passenger in the other vehicle were transported to the hospital.

On November 25, 2023, the Portland Police Bureau provided an upgrade confirming that the driver of the stolen Kia had succumbed to his injuries. 37-year-old Gilberth A. Colli-Garma, of Portland, died of injuries sustained in the crash. Both officers have returned to duty, but the trainee officer is on modified duty while recovering. The incident remains under investigation.
